At the old Olympic Ski Lodge, Serbian refugees lived in squallor. When we arrived
the first time, we found hungry Serbs, living without running water, electricity, heat or
toilets. The stench of human feces would make one sick. The people had no means of
cleaning the facility or cooking what food they could obtain. We were not very wel-
come due to our role in the conflict, but after repeated trips with food and other
necessities they began to invite us into their "homes" to share a meal with them. As
time went on jobs were created in nearby Pale, and the refugees began to work.
Our engineers repaired plumbing and electricity while the rest of us delivered food,
cleaning supplies, clothing, and toys for the children. Our multinational group contin-
ued to supply aid to the refugees until long after I returned to the safety of my
home in the US. This page currently under construction...
